BankBazaar Aspiration Index | Vol. 8

We present the eighth edition of BankBazaar’s Aspiration Index®, the country’s largest study of India’s aspirations through the lens of personal finance.

The All-India Aspiration Index stands at 85.5, unchanged from last year. For the first time in eight years, the index has held steady. This pause signals consolidation rather than decline. Salaried Indians appear to be recalibrating their ambitions in response to economic uncertainty and the expanding influence of Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence emerges as the defining theme of this year’s report. Many respondents report improved income prospects, productivity gains, or access to new opportunities enabled by AI tools. At the same time, others indicate disruption where reliance has outpaced skill adaptation. AI is largely viewed as an enabler that augments human capability rather than replaces human judgement. Its growing presence is reshaping how individuals think about income security, career longevity, and future preparedness.

The Index tracks salaried men and women between 22 and 45 years across 17 life goals grouped under five broad aspirations: Health, Wealth, Fame, Relationships, and Personal Growth. It measures the importance assigned to each goal, the confidence in achieving it, and the readiness to fulfil it. A higher score reflects stronger and more defined aspirations.

Health continues to rank first. Mental well-being remains the single most important aspiration and also shows the widest gap between desire and preparedness. Rising work pressures, income volatility, and rapid technological change have made mental health the most sought-after yet least fulfilled goal.

Wealth moves into second place, driven by a renewed focus on homeownership and financial security. Experience-led aspirations such as frequent travel and early retirement have softened. Buying a home has returned to the top three wealth goals. The shift suggests a preference for asset-backed stability amid elevated urban costs and job uncertainty.

Relationships remain central to Indian households. Investing in children’s education continues to rank among the most important goals. Living close to family and preserving long-term bonds remain significant priorities, especially among women.

Women continue to strengthen the overall index, reinforcing a long-term pattern linking workforce participation with aspiration levels. However, the aspiration-readiness gap has widened for women, particularly in health and education-linked goals. This divergence merits attention from policymakers and employers alike.

Mental health, children’s education, and homeownership retain the top three positions. Together, they reflect a clear pivot towards stability, preparedness, and resilience as the defining markers of progress.

We hope the findings in this report deepen the understanding of how India’s aspirations are evolving in a changing economic landscape shaped increasingly by technology.
