Bohag Bihu: Bohag Bihu is celebrated by the people of Assam as well as other Northeastern states of India. The festival marks the start of the Assamese New Year.

Janmashtami: Janmashtami is a spiritual festival, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. The devotees fast the entire day and spend time reciting devotional songs.

Maha Shivaratri: During the Mahavir Jayanti, which is observed every year, a massive fair is organised in Shiva Temples to offer pooja to Lord Shiva.

Kali Puja: Assam celebrates Kali Puja like Odisha and West Bengal to worship Goddess Kali. The bhog (food) is served to the devotees gathered in pandals.

Bakrid / Eid al Adha: This festival celebrates Ibrahim’s sacrifice and people offer open-air prayers, animal sacrifices, and organises folk festivals on this day. it occurs about 11 days earlier each year as per the Gregorian calendar and on the 12th and final month in the Islamic calendar. 

Idul-Ul-Ftr: This is one of the grandest festivals of the Islamic religion and is also known as Meethi Eid, that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. People break the fast and wear new clothes, prepare new delicacies, and wish their family and friends Eid Mubarak with a gift. 

Good Friday: The day commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ that comes before the Easter Sunday. The day is not celebrated but observed with certain rituals, such as offering prayers, readings from the Bible, hymns of reflection, and prayers for forgiveness. 

May Day: May day is known as international worker’s day which is observed on the first day of the month of May each year. On this day parades are organised along with various symbolic activities, such as wearing red clothes, community events, and observing the day as a public holiday. 

Diwali: The ‘Festival of Lights’ also known as Diwali that begins on the 13th day of the half of the moon cycle Ashvina. This festival ends on the second day of the bright half of the moon month Karttika. The day is celebrated by offering prayer to Goddess Laxmi, wearing new clothes, decorating houses with lights, sending gifts and sweets to friends and relatives. 

Christmas: The birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated on Christmas on 25 December every year. People visit church, offer prayer, sing carols, decorate their houses, wear new clothes and visit friends and family with gifts to wish them a ‘Merry Christmas’ on this day.
